Pétanque (say pay-tonk) is a French ball sport played on any open ground — gravel, grass, dirt — where two teams take turns throwing steel boules as close as possible to a small wooden target ball called the cochonnet (or jack).
It's easy to learn, endlessly strategic, and perfect for all ages and fitness levels. You've probably seen it played in French village squares — we've brought that tradition right here to Kalinga Park.
The beauty of pétanque is that a complete beginner can have a genuinely great time on their very first day, while still having years of skill to develop ahead of them.
No booking required for social sessions. Walk into Kalinga Park during one of our three weekly sessions — someone will greet you, introduce you to the group, and get you started.
02
Borrow our boules
We have club boules available for beginners to borrow at no charge. You don't need to buy anything to give it a try — just bring yourself and comfortable shoes.
03
Play alongside members
You'll be paired with experienced players who'll walk you through the rules, the technique, and the tactics — all in a relaxed, no-pressure way. Most people are throwing competently within an hour.
How it works
The rules in two minutes
The object of the game
Score points by getting your boules closer to the cochonnet (jack) than your opponents. The team whose boule is closest scores one point per boule that is nearer than the opponent's nearest boule.
Formats
Singles: 1 vs 1, 3 boules each. Doubles: 2 vs 2, 3 boules each. Triples: 3 vs 3, 2 boules each. A game is won by the first team to reach 13 points.
Throwing styles
Pointing — rolling or lofting your boule to land close to the jack. Shooting — throwing hard to knock an opponent's boule away. A satisfying skill to develop over time.
Where you stand
Players must throw from inside a small circle drawn on the ground, with both feet on the ground until the boule lands. Simple — and easier to remember than it sounds.

Yes, annual membership is payable once you'd like to officially join the club. Your first visit is always free, and we encourage newcomers to come along a few times before committing. Membership includes access to all sessions and eligibility for Pétanque Federation Australia events.
Everyone starts somewhere. The members at BPC are some of the most welcoming people you'll find in any sport. We've had complete beginners become club champions within a couple of years — the learning curve is gentle and the journey is enjoyable.
